The UN said on Tuesday (21) that Poland and Belarus denied access to the border between the two countries, where the organization intended to investigate the migration crisis.
The spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Liz Throssell, explained that a team traveled to Poland, but “without having permission to access the border area”, while Belarus blocked access to all its territory.
“We ask the authorities of both countries to immediately authorize access to the border areas to humanitarian and human rights representatives, journalists, lawyers and representatives of civil society,” he added.
The High Commission also called on Belarus and Poland for an urgent solution to the desperate situation of migrants and refugees at the border.
Between November 29 and December 3, a team from the High Commission traveled to Poland, unable to get close to the border, and their work was reduced to meetings with government and civil society representatives, as well as interviews with 31 migrants who had arrived in the country. between August and November.
“People interviewed described disastrous conditions on both sides of the border, with no or limited access to food, clean water and shelter,” said Throssell.
The spokeswoman added that many claimed that they were attacked by security forces in Belarus and that agents forced them to cross the border, with instructions on where and when to pass, and that they were prevented from returning to Minsk.
The High Commission asked Belarus to investigate the allegations and to “stop the practices immediately”. At the same time, the body urged Poland to stop sending migrants to Belarus without examining each case individually.
Western countries accuse Belarus of orchestrating the flow of migrants across the EU border in retaliation for sanctions imposed after the questioned 2020 elections.
Minsk denies the accusations and claims that Warsaw violently returns migrants who manage to enter its territory.
