The WRC 2021 has just finished and the teams are all already focused on preparing the new hybrid Rally1 cars that will race next season in the World Rally Championship, but just over a month before the start of the new season there is already a 2022 event at risk: this is the Rally of Sweden.
The only event held on the snow of the WRC is back on the calendar after being canceled last year due to problems related to travel from the COVID-19 pandemic, but also from the contagion curve that 12 months ago had advised the promoters of the event to take a break.
In place of the Rally of Sweden, the Arctic Rally Finland took place, another event entirely on snow, which saw the triumph of the Estonians of Hyundai Motorsport Ott Tanak and Martin Jarveoja for the only time this season.
Two months after the start of the event in Sweden, the AKK promoters have made it known that they are ready to move the event again from Sweden to Finland, to be precise in Rovaniemi, if the Swedish path is not yet ready.
After the events of 2020, with the Rally of Sweden heavily curtailed due to the lack of snow. For this reason it was decided to move the event further north, so as to avoid the same situation from happening again. The current problem, however, is linked to the preparation of the tests, which is proceeding slowly.
For this reason AKK has already tested the waters with Rovaniemi. The Finnish city has already made it known that it is ready to host a WRC event again. However, it will be the FIA to give the green light to the eventual change of venue of the Rally of Sweden. We would like to remind you that, at least at the moment, no events “on the bench” have been communicated, that is, ready to replace the starting ones if needed.
The final decision should be taken next December 19, or in 11 days. One of the conditions that will allow the event to be moved will be to run the same open door, allowing fans to follow the special stages on the side of the road.
