With the revival of its ‘retraining week’ for catering managers, supermarket chain Dirk van den Broek has incurred the ire of the club of 120 top restaurants in the Netherlands.
With the retraining program, Dirk wants to lure executives from sectors in which there is little or no work due to the corona measures, such as the catering industry. In a week they are being prepared for a job at the supermarket chain. The recruitment campaign first started at the end of last year and now again. Much to the anger of the G4 foundation, the umbrella organization of restaurant associations Alliance Gastronomique, JRE-Jeunes Restaurateurs, Les Patrons Cuisiniers and Fine Eastern Restaurants.
“Our pants are falling off. That’s not how you treat each other as branches,” says chairman Patrick van Huizen. “Both Dirk and we take care of the inner man, but this is really inappropriate. I understand that the supermarket chain has a personnel problem and is conducting a recruitment campaign to solve it, but hijacking people is going too far,” he said with restrained anger.
The fine-dining restaurants in the Netherlands did not respond to Dirk’s recruitment campaign at the end of last year because it seemed to them the best option, but now things are different and they have to. Van Huizen: ,,Our companies are figuratively on fire. Due to the corona measures, we had to close, then we were allowed to run again, but we faced a staff shortage because many employees – very understandable – had chosen eggs for their money. Now half of the catering industry is closed again and the other half has no staff. Employees with a heart for the cause who have stayed than to call on them to be retrained is a stab punch.”
Dirk’s action will have an end, promises the chairman of the club of top restaurants. ,,At the next meeting with our joint suppliers such as Sligro and Hanos, the issue will be discussed and we will make it clear that this is not how you treat colleagues”, says Van Huizen.
The chairman of the G4 foundation said he was inundated on Saturday morning with phone calls and emails from affiliated restaurant owners who expressed their dissatisfaction with Dirk’s recruitment campaign.
Taken offline
‘We received the same noises and have taken action by taking the relevant expressions offline’, is a response from the Detailresult Group, which includes the supermarket chain. “We regret that our retraining campaign is against people’s sore legs. That is by no means our intention.’
