Berlin – The SPD is repositioning itself in terms of personnel. A new party leadership is to be elected at the federal party conference, which is held digitally due to the corona. The SPD continues to rely on a double model. We are looking for another co-boss besides Saskia Esken. The previous co-party chairman Norbert Walter-Borjans has announced that he wants to withdraw from the first row of the SPD. His successor is already ready.
SPD party congress: Klingbeil wants to become the new party leader
Lars Klingbeil, previous Secretary General, is applying for the office. The 43-year-old, who was significantly involved in the SPD campaign for the federal election, was actually also a candidate for ministerial. But Klingbeil wants to go to the top of the party. Given his proximity to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, does that harbor potential for conflict?
Klingbeil himself recently spoke of a clear division of responsibilities in his new position. The Lower Saxony does not see his task in “keeping the party on the chancellor’s course”, as he explained in the SWR. The government is responsible for “day-to-day business”, while the party should develop “the long lines” and also “think beyond the legislative period”. It is certain that Klingbeil will be elected party leader.
SPD party congress: Kevin Kühnert is to become the new general secretary
On Saturday, the SPD will also clarify the successor to Klingbeil. Kevin Kühnert takes over as Secretary General. The former Juso boss was previously deputy party leader and has a close relationship with Saskia Esken (and Norbert Walter-Borjans). His relationships with Scholz are considered professional. However, Kühnert is not the biggest fan of the new chancellor. It was Kühnert’s Jusos who prevented Scholz as party leader in 2019. However, his choice is also considered safe.
The chairman of the NRW-SPD, Thomas Kutschaty, is to be Kühnert’s successor and thus one of five deputy bosses. The other vice chairs are the state chairmen Anke Rehlinger (Saarland) and Serpil Midyatli (Schleswig-Holstein) as well as the federal ministers Hubertus Heil (labor) and Klara Geywitz (building and housing).
SPD party congress: as with the Greens – application calls for more say in the coalition agreement
Some motions will also be dealt with at the party congress. These are mostly just minor details or formal resolutions such as new financial regulations. Two proposals in particular are of interest. The working group of social democratic women calls for more equality in districts and state associations. Where the proportion of women in the local and sub-district or district boards is below 40 percent, the basic mandates are to be dropped in future.
Meanwhile, the SPD local association Schwerin-Südstadt calls for more involvement of the members when it comes to the adoption of a coalition agreement at the federal level. As with the Greens, there should also be a membership vote in the SPD in the future. The SPD – and also the FDP – had only approved the coalition agreement at a special party conference. In the Greens, all around 125,000 members were allowed to vote. (as) *Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
