After heavy snowfall, more ski lifts in the Bavarian Alps open at the weekend. However, caution is advised, especially in one region.
Bolsterlang / Bayrischzell – At the start of the season of several lifts and cable cars in the Bavarian Alps at the weekend, mountaineers should exercise caution away from the slopes, especially in the Allgäu.
The avalanche warning service classifies the danger from avalanches in the region according to information from Friday (as of 6:00 p.m.) above the tree line as “great” (warning level four out of five), in lower locations as “significant” (warning level three).
Also because of up to 70 centimeters of fresh snow in the past few days, large avalanches could resolve themselves there, said the warning service. The main problem in the Allgäu, however, is the snow drifts that are created by drifts. For mountaineers it is therefore important to avoid such deposits in steep terrain. These are easily recognizable if they are not covered by fresh snow. That is quite possible in the Allgäu: The German Weather Service expected further snowfall in the region on Friday.
Risk in higher altitudes “considerable”
Even in the higher altitudes above 1600 meters in the rest of the Bavarian Alpine region, the risk of leaks is “considerable” according to the report (warning level three). Below that, according to the avalanche warning center on Saturday, the danger is “moderate” (warning level two).
An incident in the Traunstein district on Friday showed that caution is also required in this situation: A 41-year-old fell into a steep gully at the summit of Hochgern, triggering an avalanche. She was recovered seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
In addition to individual ski areas in the Allgäu such as the Hörnerbahn in Bolsterlang, the Upper Bavarian ski areas Sudelfeld and Spitzingsee also want to start the season at the weekend. According to the latest decisions of the Bavarian cabinet, vaccinated and convalescent people can then climb into the ski lifts without an additional test. The previous regulation with 2G plus – i.e. with an additional quick test – had caused incomprehension among the cable car operators. dpa
