Brussels – EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen paid tribute to Germany’s importance for the European Union during the inaugural visit of the new Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). “Germany was and is always very important for the development of our community,” said the CDU politician at a joint press conference with Scholz in Brussels. The German chancellor has always had a very formative influence. “That is why your early visit here at the European Commission is a very encouraging signal for all of us.” Scholz said: “Germany is a very European nation.” German politics «must feel directly responsible for progress in Europe».
Scholz and von der Leyen sat together in two federal cabinets under the former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). “We have known each other personally for a number of years and have worked together well and trustingly,” said von der Leyen. “And of course that also helps in my new role.” (dpa)
