Abu Dhabi, the last act of the 2021 Formula 1 season. Yas Marina will be awarded the world titles of this interminable as well as thrilling season in the top category of 4-wheel motorsport.
For the 22nd and final grand prix of 2021, Pirelli will bring the following compounds:
Pirelli PZero White Hard C3
Pirelli PZero Yellow Medium C4
Pirelli PZero Red Soft C5
We remind you that Pirelli’s 2021 range goes from the C1, the harder compound, to the C5, the softer compound. In this case, the Milanese manufacturer, the sole supplier of Formula 1 tires, has chosen the three softest compounds ever.
Why Pirelli has chosen these compounds
- The longest ever Formula 1 season ends with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the twenty-second race on the calendar. After the new-entries Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Yas Marina represents a more familiar challenge, although this year the track has undergone quite significant changes. Nevertheless, on the basis of the simulations and data available, the same compounds of 2020 were selected: C3 as P Zero White hard, C4 as P Zero Yellow medium and C5 as P Zero Red soft.
- The changes made to the circuit, designed to increase the chances of overtaking, will increase speeds and loads in some corners. However, the track’s asphalt remains smooth, with an average level of stress on the tires in terms of wear and tear. This is why the three softer compounds in the P Zero range remain the most appropriate choice.
Characteristics of the route
- The track, which has remained unchanged since its debut in 2009, has undergone several changes: at the start of the lap, the chicane that formed turns 5 and 6 was replaced by a straight; the next hairpin has been anticipated and widened, thus increasing the speed with which you enter the following straight. A long curve with light banking was introduced to replace the existing complex succession of corners 11 to 14. Finally, towards the end of the lap, the four tight corners that develop around the Yas Marina hotel (17 to 20) were enlarged and made faster.
- These changes shortened the track by 273 meters, meaning the race will run over 58 laps and no more than 55, and the lap time is expected to decrease by around 14 seconds.
- As usual, the race should start just before sunset and run at night, which will cause the asphalt temperature to drop quite quickly and consequently change the behavior of the tires. FP2 and qualifying are the only two sessions representative of the race conditions, while the other free practice will be held in the heat of the day.
- Last year, with the same compound nomination, the winning strategy was a stop from medium to hard, and it was the sixth consecutive year that the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was won by those starting from pole position. All three drivers on the podium adopted the same strategy and only three drivers made more than one stop.
Mario Isola, Pirelli’s car racing manager: “Yas Marina is a consolidated appointment for the season finale, but the changes made to the circuit will give a touch of novelty and the promise of a breathtaking final for what has been a spectacular season. first time we tackle the new layout, which also includes resurfaced track areas, but we can count on simulations and other information to get prepared. Generally speaking, thanks to the creation of faster corners, the track as a whole is faster and presents greater opportunities for overtaking “.
“The result of these changes is an increase in vertical loads, especially on the front. But we don’t expect the track severity on the tires to change significantly, so we decided to keep the nomination softer.”
“The week after the race, the teams will test the final specification of 18 inches for 2022 using mule cars. We will see the final 2022 single-seater package in action for the first time with the new tires during early season testing. at the end of February “.
