NEW DELHI (Reuters) – India has no current plans to allow extra imports of soy bran, an important input for animal feed, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday, despite requests from cattle raisers for more shipments to reduce high commodity prices.
Last month, the All India Poultry Breeders Association asked the government to allow the import of 550,000 tonnes of feed.
“There is no proposal with the government regarding imports,” said Goyal in a tweet, referring to foreign purchases of soy bran.
In August, the government relaxed import rules to allow its first shipments of 1.2 million tonnes of genetically modified (GM) soy meal to help the poultry industry after animal feed prices tripled in one year to one. record.
But traders managed to sign agreements to import only around 650,000 tonnes of soymeal against 1.2m tonnes allowed before the deadline for overseas purchases expired on 31 October.
The government takes into account the impact on local prices before accepting orders for more soybean meal imports to avoid losses to producers.
