SANTIAGO (Reuters) – Chilean health authorities said Saturday they have detected the first case of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus in a person who has arrived from Africa.
The foreign patient who lives in Chile arrived in the country on November 25, from Ghana, with a negative PCR test, but the test performed on his arrival was positive and was subsequently sequenced.
“The passenger, who had taken two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, is currently in good health and fulfilling his isolation,” said the Health Department for the Valparaíso region, in the central region of the country.
Chile has had a drop in contagion in recent weeks because of a massive and rapid vaccination program.
