Valtteri Bottas, Lando Norris, George Russell, Nicholas Latifi. Four names, four Formula 1 drivers who have a recent past in common: one drilling in the Qatar Grand Prix. As well as at Silverstone in 2020 and in Azerbaijan this season, the Pirelli it ended up in the eye of the storm. After the first analyzes (the results of which were provided to the FIA), the Milanese manufacturer confirmed what its F1 and Car Racing manager Mario Isola had anticipated: the cause of the punctures is not to be found in production defects but in violent passages on the Losail curbs by some pilots.
As stated in the press release just arrived from Pirelli, “the analyzes still in progress have provided a first series of evidences that exclude production defects. Based on the feedback obtained so far, the origin of the problem is mainly due to the prolonged residence time of the tires on the curbs, routes at high speed and with high lateral and vertical loads, conditions determined by the unique characteristics of this circuit. The stresses induced by the curbs, the intensity of which cannot be deduced from the data available before the race, damaged the construction of the tires themselves, triggering a loss of pressure from the inner side which caused, after several seconds, the collapse of the structure“.
