The 2021 season had long stretches Lando Norris in the role of the main spoilers of the plans of Mercedes and Red Bull. The young English talent of McLaren during the first part of the championship has several times put his wheels in front of those of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, occupying the third position in the world championship for many weeks. Then some mistakes, a bit of bad luck and a drop in the performance of his McLaren ‘sucked’ him back in the standings, leaving him with only one length of margin over Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc in the duel for fifth place in the rankings.
In these first three years in Formula 1, Norris stood out not only for his speed on the track but also for his contagious joy outside of it. The Bristol native has earned the sympathy of many fans, especially among the very young, and has retained a special relationship with several drivers of his generation, with whom he grew up between karts and minor formulas. But F1 is often ruthless, and to reach the top you also need the ability to put feelings aside when the going gets tough. During an interview with the BBC Sport, the McLaren standard bearer has made it clear that he is ready to do so, when he finally has the chance to play for a world title.
“Now we’re still where I, George [Russell], Alex [Albon] and Charles [Leclerc] we compliment each other a lot, get along and chat. But things always change when you become competitive against each other – Norris admitted – we still have a friendly relationship because we have never raced against each other. But if suddenly during the next season we find ourselves in the middle of the championship with me, Max [Verstappen] and Lewis [Hamilton] fighting, I don’t think I’d be that good guy. That’s how it works “he concluded.
