Terrance Pieters put the Orange in the lead after more than half an hour. He scored from close range, after good preparatory work by Thierry Brinkman, who was appointed captain by Delmee. Shortly after Pieters’ goal, Alex Hendrickx equalized from a penalty corner.
Jip Janssen gave the Netherlands the lead again. He did that from a penalty shot, which was awarded because Dennis Warmerdam had been pushed to the ground. Again Hendrickx took the equalizer, again from a penalty corner.
Delmee, who played no fewer than 401 international matches, succeeded Max Caldas as national coach after the Tokyo Olympics. He went through a major metamorphosis. For example, he had Dennis Warmerdam, Koen Bijen, Tijmen Reijenga, Steijn van Heijningen and Jasper Brinkman make his debut. They should make old-timers like Robbert Kemperman and Jeroen Hertzberger forget. Hertzberger was an attentive spectator in Amstelveen.
Shoot-outs continued after regular time. Brinkman, Thijs van Dam and Jonas de Geus were accurate, while all Belgian bets were turned by keeper Maurits Visser, who left a good impression. Pirmin Blaak was still the goalkeeper in Tokyo. Because of the win in the shoot-outs, the Orange took 2 points, a regular win is good for 3 points.
On Sunday, the Orange and Belgium meet again in Amstelveen. The Belgians had already played two matches in the Pro League, the Netherlands played for the first time in the country tournament.
