The sector ofhydrogen it is destined to grow, and the opportunities for energy and transport are manifold. The Friuli Venezia Giulia, through its major institutional representatives, yesterday showed that he wanted to make himself available to create a significant industrial center, with the creation of jobs and start-ups of excellence. An ambitious cross-border project was presented in Gorizia that could transform FVG, Slovenia and Croatia in a kind of ‘hydrogen valley‘of the northern Adriatic, with constant cooperation that will bring, among other benefits, decarbonisation.
The operational technical table, for the Italian side, will be led by Rodolfo Taccani, who is delegate of the University of Trieste for technology transfer. The Belgian will coordinate the work Bart Biebuyck, which at the head of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), a European public-private institution. The latter highlighted the international character of the initiative, essential to lay the first foundations for European standards in the transfer of hydrogen.
The main idea is precisely to create so-called “value chains“, With a real interconnection of the production and use of hydrogen. In this sense, public transport and heavy vehicles could be among the first to exploit the potential of the system. Interest in the project sees some multinational companies interested, such as Fincantieri, Wärtsilä, Snam. Without forgetting the universities. On the timing it is too early to put forward hypotheses, because a lot will depend on how the transition towards environmental sustainability will continue, and on how the issue of costs for the production of green hydrogen will evolve.
“Friuli Venezia Giulia is ready to do its part for the best outcome of an ambitious project such as the one for the creation of the ‘North Adriatic cross-border Hydrogen Valley’, which allows us to take advantage of our position in the center of Europe and the vocation to international collaboration to give substance to the ecological transition and decarbonisation. Friuli Venezia Giulia is already committed to the complex transformation of our economy through a radical change aimed at replacing the use of fossil fuels with clean energy, but the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley project represents a common path with Slovenia and Croatia that it embraces a cross-border and transnational dimension of investment in knowledge, research and technology transfer and industrial reconversion. An innovative path, for which in addition to investing directly, we will ask for concrete support from the European Union, so as not to miss an opportunity that will not arise again in the future“. This was stated by the Regional Councilor for Heritage, Sebastiano Callari.
“The establishment of hydrogen valleys in our country is part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, especially with a view to the conversion of abandoned industrial sites. Added to this is the desire to strengthen the use of hydrogen in industrial sectors for which it is more difficult to reduce polluting emissions, such as steel, glass and ceramics, and in transport. It is therefore essential to support research and development to improve knowledge of hydrogen-related technologies at all stages, in order to develop a network that allows testing new technologies and providing services to companies interested in investing in this sector.“, Callari specified.
