Volkswagen, Audi towards the acquisition of McLaren. But comes the denial from the English House
The Volkswagen group crosses the Channel again and buys the British car manufacturer Mc Laren, specializing in sports cars and from Formula 1. The specialized magazine writes it Autocar, citing well-informed sources after that BMW denied being interested in the historic British brand, founded in 1985 by the New Zealand driver Bruce Mc Laren. The operation is conducted by Audi, a ‘premium’ brand from Wolfsburg, which has acquired the entire control of the woking house.
In Great Britain the Volkswagen group controls since 1998 the Bentley brand, spun off from Rolls Royce, passed instead to BMW. Through Audi Volkswagen it controls the Italian Lamborghini and Ducati, in the sector of racing and prestige cars and motorcycles respectively. According to the first reconstructions Mc Laren should have spun off the Formula 1 division, to be sold to Audi and the sports car division, destined for BMW.
The operation anticipated by Autocar on the other hand, it dissolves all doubts, indicating Audi as the sole purchaser and thus decreeing the entry of Volkswagen group in Formula 1. Positive the reaction of the title Volkswagen on the stock exchange in Frankfurt, where, after a morning of decline, it turned positive, gaining 0.99% at 189.86 euros.
Inside the Volkswagen group, controlled by Porsche Holding (+ 0.31%), there is also the historic sports brand Porsche, repeatedly the subject of indiscretions about a possible listing on the autonomous stock exchange on the model of what was done in 2015 by the then FCA with Ferrari.
For its part, Mc Laren denies having been sold to Audi, requesting the removal of the news. This was stated in an official note from Woking in which it is emphasized that “McLaren has learned of a news in which it is stated that the Group has been sold to Audi”.
According to McLaren it is a “completely unfounded news” e McLaren he is asking for their removal. “” Mc Laren has always been involved in discussions and collaborations with relevant partners and suppliers – it continues – including other manufacturers, but there has been absolutely no change in the ownership structure of the Group “.
