It will be an atypical final that of the 2021 MXGP World Championship, which will crown its world champion on Wednesday. The Lombardy Grand Prix, held on Sunday in Mantua, did not change the balance between the leader Romain Febvre and Jeffrey Herlings, who shared the heats.
When only the City of Mantua Grand Prix is missing, the Kawasaki and KTM standard bearers are separated by just 3 points, as both took home a haul of 47 yesterday (a first and a second place ), even if the Dutchman got on the top step of the podium by virtue of his success in the second stage.
Probably, however, no one would have bet on the possibility of arriving at the last act of the season with the Frenchman watching everyone from above, even if it must be said that his schedule was probably the most constant, with Herlings and the reigning champion Tim Gajser who paid for the most errors and even some injuries.
For the Slovenian from Honda, the chances of holding on to the crown became very complicated this weekend, because he paid a very high price for a mistake made in the first heat: in the very early stages he found himself ending up off the track and came back cutting a corner. . A maneuver that cost him a penalty of five positions that made him retreat to eighth place. If we add to this the third place in Race 2, a gap of 15 points emerges which is not impossible to fill, but it is certainly prohibitive.
The Mantua race once again gave the joy of the podium also to Tony Cairoli, third in both heats as well as in the final classification of the day, even if in Race 1 he inherited the position thanks to the penalty of Gajser. For Wednesday, therefore, he seems to have what it takes to say hello in his own way, therefore as a protagonist. Alessandro Lupino’s performance was also good, finishing with a tenth and a ninth place. But the revelation was Ruben Fernandez, who at his debut in MXGP was able to give himself a fourth and a seventh place, thus finishing sixth in the GP standings.
MX2: Geerts master on the sand of Mantua
On the sandy bottom of Mantua the MX2 favorite was Jago Geerts and the Yamaha rider respected the predictions, even if the world champion Maxime Renaux made him suffer more than expected. The Frenchman was in fact very fast in the first fraction, in which he won by surprise.
In the second, however, he could not do anything to stem Geerts, who became the protagonist of a good comeback, not without a thread of controversy over the contact that ended up knocking out the Austrian René Hofer, who at the opening of the starting gate he had been among the quickest along with Tom Vialle.
The 2020 champion had two excellent ideas, but then he had to be content with finishing in third and fourth position, still climbing on the lowest step of the podium with his KTM. Geerts will therefore be able to continue hoping to snatch second place in the World Championship, given that the points that separate them are only 7.
It was not a particularly brilliant Sunday for Mattia Guadagnini, 12th in Race 1 after being slowed down by a contact at the start and then fifth in the second stage. For him, therefore, the dream of the world podium has now definitively vanished. Andrea Adamo’s ninth place in the first heat with his GasGas should be framed.
