Idiocy dwells among some fans of every competitive discipline. Not only the major team sports have to deal with it, but also those that seemed safe from the follies of evidently lonely individuals. This is the case with the motocross and one of its most famous champions, Antonio Cairoli.
The nine-time world champion has indeed received death threats after losing fourth place in favor of teammate Jeffrey Herlings in race-2 of the MXGP round of Pietramurata (31 October). Herlings, unlike Cairoli, is still in the running for the title and therefore KTM’s choice to help his winning horse seems logical.
Not all fans have understood this, however. And the man from Messina vented on social media like this: “I am happy with my performance, but not with the result. In some situations you have to respect team orders and help your partner. Any house would have done it if they had a driver fighting for the title. To the few people who sent me death threats I would like to say: enough! I don’t deserve it. I always behave like a true gentleman on and off the track“.
The Motocross World Championship will live on two other events, both in Mantua, for a total of four races. At the head of the championship is Romain Febvre with 614 points, hunted by Tim Gajser at 613 and Herlings himself at 611. Without the gesture of the 36-year-old di Patti, who will retire at the end of the year, the Dutchman would have been five points behind the top.
