Italian footballer Edoardo Bove collapsed on the pitch during the Serie A match between Fiorentina and Inter Milan and was taken from the stadium in an ambulance in dramatic moments. The first division game between Boves Fiorentina and the champions from Milan was canceled. Many players and staff were crying, as could be seen on TV footage.
Bove was taken to the intensive care unit at the Careggi University Hospital in Florence and is being treated there, Florence announced in the evening. According to initial cardiological and neurological tests, he was in a stable condition and no acute damage to the nervous system or heart and lung functions were found.
The offensive player and teammate of the German national player Robin Gosens collapsed after 16 minutes of the game and remained motionless. The broadcast showed other players and first responders immediately trying to open Bove’s mouth, potentially exposing his tongue. They frantically called paramedics and doctors over and then shielded Bove from the cameras.
The 22-year-old was then quickly driven straight from the pitch by an ambulance. Many people present were shocked and some were praying. Referee Daniele Doveri sent the teams to the dressing rooms; It quickly became clear that the game would not continue that day. Shortly afterwards, the league also confirmed this.
In Italy, similar emergency situations have occurred on the football field a few times in recent years. Fiorentina in particular experienced a terrible incident in 2018 when captain Davide Astori suffered a cardiac arrest and died in his hotel room in Udine shortly before an away game. Earlier this year, Fiorentina general manager Joe Barone suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 57. After Bove’s emergency became known, many Serie A clubs took to social media to express their condolences. “We are all with you, Edoardo,” wrote record champions Juventus Turin on X. “All of our thoughts are with you, Edoardo. Forza!,” announced AC Milan. AS Roma, where Bove, a Roman native, played in his childhood and youth before he was loaned to Florence in the summer, wrote: “One of us, we are all with you. Forza Edo!”
