The PP of Gipuzkoa announced this Thursday a political maneuver that contradicts its strong criticism of the PNV and especially the socialists in the rest of the institutional spheres. The spokesperson at the General Meetings of that territory, Mikel Lezama, has announced that they will facilitate the approval of the 2025 provincial budgets. “Political disagreement or partisan battle cannot be an obstacle for Gipuzkoa to advance,” Lezama stated before the media.
The PP has already allowed the investiture of Peneuvista Eider Mendoza in 2023 and voted in favor of the PNV and PSE-EE Government as an alternative to EH Bildu, which won the regional elections. In 2024 the Provincial Council did not have budgets due to its minority situation and, looking ahead to next year, although nationalists and socialists have also explored possible pacts with EH Bildu and with Podemos, which maintains representation there with two seats, it has finally looked to its right . It so happens that this pact with the PP is the first major decision of María Eugenia Arrizabalaga as the new president of the PNV of Gipuzkoa after decades of Joseba Egibar’s mandate.
The EH Bildu coalition, which in parallel maintains negotiations with PNV and PSE-EE in the Basque Government, has lamented that nationalists and socialists have to know “with whom to travel” because it is not the same to have as a “travel companion” the right than to “progressives and nationalists.” In any case, although they initially demanded a coherent and “global” agreement in all institutional areas, EH Bildu does not take this maneuver as a break with the Executive of Imanol Pradales. Of course, in Euskadi PNV and PSE-EE have an absolute majority. The same does not happen in Álava, where both formations require a third support. Here, a possible pact with Podemos and IU was initially considered, but formally there are also contacts with the PP and EH Bildu.
