There are many brands that are delaying the arrival of their electric cars or even, in certain cases, canceling some models already planned. Luxury brands such as Aston Martin or Bentley have already announced the delay in their first ‘zero emissions’ model. Now it’s Lamborghini’s turn, well The Launcher will not be put into mass production until at least 2030. The reason is what brands always express: it is not “the right time” for an electric car of this type.
Specifically, it has been the CEO of the company himself, Stephan Winkelmannwho in an interview with the media Coach has confirmed such restructuring in its medium and long-term planning.
Lamborghini won’t have an electric car anytime soon
Until now, it was assumed that the arrival of the electric Lamborghini Lanzador would take place around the year 2027 or 2028. In fact, this was how the company confirmed it until just a few weeks ago. However, this will ultimately not be the case and Lamborghini is now committed to mass manufacturing this electric crossover in the year 2030.
“The electrification strategy previously outlined by the company was not correct, because when it comes to launching electric vehicles, it is not about innovation, It’s about arriving at the right time”Winkelmann stated. To this he added: “When we decided to take the first step of our strategy, making the entire range new and hybrid, it was a great effort for the company. Therefore, we believe that focusing on a step-by-step approach to electrification is the right thing to do.”
This way, Lamborghini will establish its range of hybrid modelswhich has recently been released and, therefore, will extend its commercial life beyond what was expected, putting its first electric car on the market at least two years later. One of the points that Winkelmann has defended has been precisely that the Launcher is a totally new model, which does not replace any other, so it could be considered the manufacturer’s fourth alternative.
“We have enough time to decide whether we need to further accelerate or delay the introduction of electric cars. So far we are not thinking about delaying it further: we said that we want to have our first electric car at the end of this decade, and it is something that we will continue to promote, because we said that it has to be an additional car, a fourth model.
The brand is therefore committed to putting the Launcher on the market in 2030. However, Winkelmann also admitted that The adoption curve of electric cars is not as expected in Europe. In fact “it is even more difficult for the supercar segment in which Lamborghini operates, so the company’s strategy of staying in hybridization as long as possible is really the right one.”
To this, the manager added: “I don’t think that battery technology is going to disappear from our cars, because at the end of the day it is something that improves performance, not inhibits it. And the batteries will evolve and, if we continue to be hybrids, this will improve the performance of the cars even more.”
