The three-time Olympic swimming champion Michael Groß receives the Golden Sports Pyramid from Deutsche Sporthilfe for his life’s work. The 60-year-old will be honored for “his outstanding sporting successes, his professional achievements and his social commitment,” the foundation said on Wednesday. The award ceremony will take place at the Ball des Sports on February 22, 2025 in the Frankfurt Festhalle.
“I am very honored by the award because, on the one hand, this extraordinary prize does not just look at sporting successes,” said Groß, who was nicknamed “Albatross” by the trade press during his active days because of his enormous arm span of 2.13 m. “After 43 years, I have come full circle with my election as Sporthilfe’s Junior Athlete of the Year, which still means a lot to me today. This certificate hangs in my home right next to the Olympic victories.”
The father of two children has been working as an independent management consultant for over 30 years. Groß works as a coach and speaker, he teaches students and is an author. At Sporthilfe, Groß was a member of the then voluntary board of directors from 2001 to 2005 and headed the economic council from 2003 to 2005. The Golden Sports Pyramid has been awarded since 2000. Those honored include Steffi Graf, Franz Beckenbauer, Heiner Brand, Henry Maske, Rosi Mittermaier, Uwe Seeler and Max Schmeling. The honor comes with prize money of 25,000 euros, which the winners traditionally pass on to a charity project in the sport of their choice.
