Former Polish Bundesliga footballer Jan Furtok is dead. As his hometown club GKS Kattowitz announced, the former Hamburger SV and Eintracht Frankfurt striker died at the age of 62 after a long, serious illness. In 2021 it became known that Furtok was suffering from Alzheimer’s. At the time, his wife Anna described how Furtok’s condition continued to deteriorate.
Jan Furtok moved to HSV from his hometown of Katowice in 1988. Five years later, the attacker moved on to Eintracht before returning to his favorite club in Katowice in 1995. He is a legend for the fans there as the most successful goalscorer in the club’s history. The attacker was also very popular in Germany. Furtok played 188 times in the Bundesliga and scored 59 goals. As a Polish international, he took part in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where his team was defeated by Brazil in the round of 16.
“My deepest condolences to the family. He was one of us. Forever in our memory,” wrote former German international Lukas Podolski, who was born in Gleiwitz, Poland and is now a professional player in Poland, on “X”.
