The wave of fires that Portugal suffered last September seriously affected the Passadiços del Paiva. The flames destroyed part of the eight kilometers of the famous wooden walkways, an attraction that also includes one of the longest pedestrian and suspension bridges in the world: 516 Arouca. Los Pasadizos has just been declared the best adventure attraction in the world for the seventh consecutive year at the World Travel Awards (World’s Leading Adventure Tourist Attraction).
The reconstruction of the sections of the Paiva Footbridges destroyed by the fire of September 18 will begin in mid-January and will end in April, three months later. with a cost of 211,700 eurosas explained a few days ago by the Arouca City Council.
The works will affect 260 meters of regular walkway along three sections of the path, and 600 meters of stairs, also in three sections, and covering both steps and handrails and connections with the sections that remained intact, added the City Council.
This labyrinth of wooden platforms and stairs over the waters of the Paiva River is about two hundred kilometers south of Vigo, in the municipality of Arouca, Aveiro district (Portugal). Before the fire they were a true natural sanctuary, without additives, in all their splendor, 8,700 meters that in its complete version require two and a half hours of exercise.
For now only the section is open Espiunca-Vaumore or less half of the route, and can only be entered through Espiunca, according to what is reported on the attraction’s website. In normal times there are two entrances, through Espiunca and through Areinho, at the other end.
Local authorities hope that this tourist area can “be fully operational next spring, which is one of the best times to visit Arouca, with the local flora in all its splendor. splendor”.
In 2009, UNESCO included the Arouca Geopark in the European Network and Global Network of Geoparks, which gives an idea of the privileged environment that surrounds this place.
Arouca completed the Paiva Passages with a spectacular 516-meter-long structure (516 Arouca bridge)which stands at 175 meters high, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.
With a width of 1.20 m, it impresses those who look up and attracts more visitors eager to be subjugated by the strong emotions that are on display just over an hour from Porto.
