The rector of the Complutense University, Joaquín Goyache, responded this Monday to the criticism of the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who, during a debate in the Madrid Assembly ten days ago, stated that “the entire left “that educational center has been colonized” and lamented the supposed loss of prestige by pointing out that “titles are given like hotcakes.” In an open letter, Goyache has described these statements as “unfair” and “false.”
Goyache maintains that the Madrid president’s statements “generate irreparable damage to the prestige of an academic institution that is an essential pillar of higher education in Spain and that enjoys widely deserved international recognition.”
Furthermore, he reminds the highest political official of the autonomy that the achievements of the Complutense “contribute, like those of the other public universities in Madrid, to projecting an image of the Community of Madrid as an attractive space for global talent and an engine of growth for the region’s economy.” Along the same lines, he points out that Ayuso herself has been part of the Complutense community having studied at one of its faculties.
“Detracting from the value of this university not only affects its workers, but also families, students and graduates who, like you, have passed through its classrooms, in addition to its global reputation and the perception that companies, institutions and future students of the educational quality of our region. Universities, as centers of knowledge and plurality of ideas, are not and should not be reduced to ideological caricatures. Accusations like these do not reflect the reality of the diversity and excellence that characterize the UCM,” insists Goyache.
At this point, the rector recalled that the Complutense “occupies position 164 in the latest edition of the prestigious QS World University ranking, positioning itself as one of the best universities in the world, occupying, for the first time in history, the best position among Spanish universities. Furthermore, he highlighted that, in this same classification, the university that he leads “has climbed 65 places in Employability compared to the previous edition, reaching position 41 in the world, and being the first in Spain according to this indicator.”
During Goyache’s mandate, the Complutense granted Ayuso the title of illustrious student. “If the president of one of the most important communities in Spain is not illustrious, I don’t know what other type of illustrious people we are going to find,” said the rector in February 2023. For Goyache, the Madrid leader “has stood out professionally in the aspect political”. The recognition received by the Madrid president was criticized by the student movement and a sector of the university community.
In the letter published this Monday, the rector urges the president to “reconsider her statements” and “publicly recognize the value and contribution of the Complutense University, as well as all the public universities of the Community of Madrid, to intellectual development.” , researcher, economic, cultural and social of our region.”
