Special prosecutor Jack Smith submitted a request this Monday to drop federal charges against Donald Trumpwithin the framework of the investigation opened by his attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 elections in the United States. “The position of the Department of Justice is that the Constitution requires that this case be dismissed before the defendant takes possession,” according to the prosecutor in a six-page document.
The tycoon faces four different charges. He is being investigated for conspiring against the United States, for preventing Congress from certifying the results collected at the polls, for conspiring against the right to vote, as well as for his attempt to obstruct the certification of the minutes.
The president-elect was indicted in August by a Washington grand jury. The prosecution argued that Trump manipulated the protesters by making them believe that then-Vice President Mike Pence could change the election results. After his refusal, his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6.
