The journalist and ABC collaborator José F. Peláez has won the fifth edition of the David Gistau Journalism Award, which was awarded today. The award, created jointly by Vocento and Unidad Editorial, highlights the literary quality and informative value of opinion pieces and pays tribute to the career of David Gistau.
José F. Peláez has received the award for his article ‘A progress of closeness’, published in ABC on November 19, 2023. The jury considers that “the article captures a social trend from humor, renews the classic view of Spanish columnism and uses perplexity and self-parody as tools to connect with his readers.
In this fifth edition of the award, endowed with 10,000 euros and sponsored by the ACS Foundation and Santander, nearly 200 collaborations or journalistic opinion pieces published or broadcast in the printed press, ‘online’, radio or television, among on July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, and in Spanish.
The jury for this edition was chaired by Gonzalo Suárez, editor-in-chief of El Mundo, and was made up of prestigious professionals in journalism and culture: Ignacio Camacho, columnist for ABC; Isabel Gutiérrez, head of International at the newspaper ABC; Rosario Pérez, ABC bullfighting chronicler; Jesús García Calero, director of ABC Cultural; Leyre Iglesias, deputy director of Opinion at El Mundo; Charo Lagares, deputy director of La Lectura; and Pablo Gil, Chief Culture Editor of El Mundo.
Winners of past editions
The journalist and writer Alberto Olmos was the winner of the first edition of the David Gistau journalism award for the article ‘Things that the poor should know’, published in the digital newspaper El Confidencial. The philosopher and writer Diego S. Garrocho won the second edition of the award for his article ‘Letter to a postmodern young man’, published in El Español. Juan Claudio de Ramón received the award in the third edition for his column ‘Am I a feminist?’, published in the newspaper El Mundo. And in the last edition, the winner was the writer Karina Sainz Borgo, for her column ‘Even if you say otherwise’, published in the newspaper ABC.
José F, Peláez, born in Valladolid, writes in El Norte de Castilla and ABC, where he is also a parliamentary chronicler. He also collaborates with Onda Cero and directs the marketing agency MARKNIAC MKT. He has also received the Joaquín Romero Murube columnism award.
