Was there actually a question to which Mario Götze didn’t initially answer with a laugh? The good mood was evident in the many interviews that the Eintracht Frankfurt professional inevitably had to give after his winning goal against Werder Bremen (1-0). It was his 100th competitive game for Hessen and coach Dino Toppmöller had already hoped for a goal for his 44th birthday on Friday. “I actually had a feeling somewhere,” Toppmöller revealed on Saturday: “We wanted Mario to always go into the box with us. He’s a player who has a very good instinct.” It’s great when a football teacher can also be a good oracle.
Under Toppmöller, Götze usually operates from a deeper midfield position, which is why the goal threat sometimes had to suffer. But now the man who once used a cross from André Schürrle from the air in the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro hit the ball high into the corner when Hugo Ekitiké laid it on him with his back to the goal (45th). The winning goal scorer also explicitly thanked left-back Nathaniel “Nene” Brown on ZDF, because without the former Nuremberg player’s appearance, the room would hardly have opened up in the patience game against Werder Bremen. Just like the beefy right-back Nnamdi Collins, 20, Brown, 21, has secured a regular place on the left flank.
The mix of talent and veterans suits Eintracht, who have also borrowed a top-class defender in the form of Belgian national player Arthur Theate, 24. The fifth competitive win in a row proved that not everything depends on the difference player Omar Marmoush.
“We have good quality, a good mix and it’s fun,” said Götze, explaining the reasons for the soaring. By the way, he “feels like the grandpa here,” joked the match winner. Kevin Trapp, 34, also received warm applause on this cool evening when the keeper and captain quickly raised his arms at Mitchell Weiser’s header (76th). Nobody is talking anymore about a changing of the guard by substitute keeper Brazilian Kauã Santos, who put in a world-class performance against FC Bayern (3:3) just seven weeks ago.
Frankfurt, second in the table, is now Munich’s first pursuer. Even though the supporters sang their loud songs of mastery, those responsible only made muted tones on this issue. Sports director Markus Krösche spoke of a “great snapshot” – but nothing more. It was one of Krösche’s first transfer ideas to bring Götze from Eindhoven to Frankfurt in the summer of 2022. “We are still early in the season,” noted Götze. “We would do well to look at the games in a differentiated manner.”
Götze tells the dramatic story of the birth of his first child on an internet portal
Looking back, he probably didn’t realize how much more carefree things would be at his third Bundesliga stop than in Dortmund or Munich. “What I have experienced here over the last two and a half years is a very positive story,” said Götze. On the Main, as a private individual, he can also stroll over the Römerberg with his family in the stream of tourists.
During the week, Götze also talked about previous fears and feelings: On the portal The Players’ Tribune did he a text in the form of a letter to his children Rome, 4, and Gioia, 1, (“Dad has a story for you”), in which he reported on the dramatic circumstances surrounding the birth of his son. When a midwife noticed his wife Ann-Kathrin’s heartbeat was too slow during a routine examination in the summer of 2020, she went to the hospital under blue lights. “I almost had the feeling that my heart would stop beating,” said the father, whose first child was born six weeks early by cesarean section.
