RTVE has awarded Telefónica the public contract for the satellite distribution of its signal for South America, Central America and the eastern part of North America for 4.18 million euros, according to the State contracting portal.
Specifically, Telefónica will provide the public corporation with the services that allow “permanent broadcasting in ‘ku’ band and through the DVB-S standard” of the RTVE signal for South and Central America and the eastern part of North America.
“For this, a satellite located in the orbital position of 30 degrees west will be used.with Europe-America connectivity and that has coverage at least equal to the current one. The service includes the transport of the signals from the News Emission Center (CEI) of Torrespaña, in Madrid, to the teleport where the upload to said satellite is made, as well as the corresponding spatial capacity therein, in addition to the monitoring and management of all this”, adds the contract.
The service is designed to supply the RTVE signal to the headers of the corporation’s clients (mainly cable operators), not private users, from the entire American continent, which is why the signal will be encrypted.
The technical specifications of the contract also indicate that currently the park of head-end receivers that receive RTVE signals in South America, Central America and the eastern part of North America “they have their antennas oriented to Hispasat 30W-5, located at 30 degrees west.”
“This is a position that has been well established in these areas for several decades, is fully established commercially and is well known by current RTVE clients (…) Any other orbital position would cause RTVE clients to necessarily reorient their antennas, which would be a serious detriment to users,” the tender adds.
