This businessman Aldama sucks

I have read on more than one occasion about the importance of forms in the consolidation of quality democracy. It is not enough that the approval of a decree or a legislative project has scrupulously complied with the procedures established by law. Or that a court ruling conforms to the provisions of a code. It is also necessary that the decisions made by rulers, legislators and judges are understandable to citizens and do not raise suspicions or doubts about their motivations. If there is no citizen confidence in the actions of the people who embody the powers of the State, a breakdown in the functioning of democracy inevitably occurs. This is what has been happening for some time with the judiciary. And what just happened this Thursday at the National Court.

In a voluntary statement before Judge Ismael Moreno, businessman Víctor de Aldama said he had paid large commissions to former Minister of Transportation José Luis Ábalos and his former advisor Koldo García, as well as a series of bribes to socialist officials. He also spoke of an operation organized by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, to allow a stopover in Madrid in 2022 for the vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, on her route to Qatar, despite there being an international arrest warrant against her. if he set foot on EU territory. And how on that stopover – which, according to Aldama’s own account, the Government tried to abort when the plane was in mid-flight to Spain – Maduro’s number two had the objective of participating in a dinner with President Sánchez and five ministers in a Madrid chalet rented for this purpose. The businessman also spoke about the interest of members of the Government in some tenders in Mexico, after which he said that President Sánchez wanted to meet him and that, in a meeting during a PSOE event, he thanked him for what he “was doing” and even (the president asked the businessman) to take a photo with him.
