Architecture is one of the most distinctive streets of the city of Barcelona. La Pedrera, Casa Vicens, Casa Amatller, Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, Palau de la Música… all these buildings have one thing in common: a unique façana that is worth contemplating for a long time.
The façades form part of the architectural and artistic landscape of the Catalan capital, and some are adorned with elements of sgraffito, a uniquely Barcelona technique that mainly reflects artistic tendencies of the Baroque, modernism or neoclassicism.
Fem a recull of some of the most original façanes of Barcelona, with book references Sgraffito Barcelonaby graphic designer Lluís Duran, and the owner of Twitter Barcelona Singular, which publishes the most peculiar indrets of the Catalan capital. Some are relatives, others have remained anonymous.
Casa Batlló
We started with a dels most emblematic buildings of Barcelona: Casa Batlló. To be a classic, it is the one that best represents the distinctive architectural tret of the Catalan capital. Located at number 43 Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló as it is known is the work of Antoni Gaudí. It is said that the façana is an apology for happiness, a fill of marine inspiration, a dreamlike monument that evokes nature and fantasy.
Gaudí will provide Casa Batlló with an original façade full of imagination, acting as a happy and happy painter. In this way, he will create an exuberant and marine façana, containing involuntary sculptures, recycled materials and decontextualized objects that he will turn into art.
The effect of a wavy surface on stone stands out, glass and ceramics are the protagonists. When the work is the first light of the morning, the rain and the sparkles give it life and a harmonious and balanced movement, as if it were a vital element of the urban landscape. Light and color are combined to invite you to a trip to the sea, beauty and joy.
La Pedrera
We continue with another classic building: La Pedrera, a name that precisely reflects its external aspect, with the stone mainly used for the design of the façade and the balconies. This is Antoni Gaudí’s last civil work, which began in 1906 and was completed in 1912. Since Antoni Gaudí was especially known for the second modernist period, this work is considered “modern.” Inscribed on the World Heritage List, in 1984 it will be, together with Park Güell and the Palau Güell, one of the first buildings of the industrial era that will enter the list of the most exceptional buildings in the world.
The House of the Quatre Rius
They especially criticize the attention of the sgraffito of the Casa dels Quatre Rius façana, located at Carrer d’Avinyó 30. The one on the main floor is an allegory to sculpture, painting, music and architecture. The second floor represents the four great rivers of the river: the Danubi, the Nil, the Ganges and the Río de la Plata. On the third floor there are large medallions that represent the four seasons.
The trencadís mosaic of Poble-sec
One of the most unique features of the Poble-sec neighborhood is that of a residential building that is located on Elkano street number 4. An authentic work of art dating back to 1900 and an unknown author. The most characteristic of this façana is the trencadís mosaic that can be seen from the exterior.
A building in the Farró neighborhood
We continue to another residential building that has a unique façana, this time located on Vallirana 55 street, in the new neighborhood of Farró, in the easternmost part of the Sarrià – Sant Gervasi district. The seus veïns have advised to maintain the essence of the seus balconies and the ornamental elements of the façana itself.
The Llorenç Armengol House
The façade of Casa Llorenç Armengol, at Rambla de Catalunya 125, highlights the repetition of the Sant Jordi and the Escut de Catalunya celebration. There are also graffiti in the hallway and staircase.
Count of Güell 22
In the Can Bacardí neighborhood, in the Maternitat, we found a façana from 1913 that reflects the modernist essence of the beginning of the second passage to Barcelona. Specifically, it is number 22 on Comte de Güell street.
The Agustí Trulla House
The Agustí Trulla House is one of the most unique sculptured façanes in Vila de Gràcia, with a symmetrical composition and faithful to the modernist tradition of the neighborhood, with three overtures on each of the four floors. Nature is the protagonist of this building, as iron flowers forge the panxude bars, carved flowers in hexagonal shapes that are repeated throughout the entire façade and sculpted flowers that mark the medal that culminates the building.
The House of the Gremi dels Velers
The façade of the Casa del Gremi dels Velers, at Via Laietana 50, preserves sculptures that show classic representations of caryatids and Atlantis, and are among the greatest in all of Catalonia.
