The mayors of most cities and towns in Spain will soon open the power button for the Christmas lighting. In Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) and Vigo, two of the cities that put more light on the offer, they have already done so. In Madrid or Seville they will wait until the last weekend of November. Here are ten clues to start planning a getaway in search of the miracle of light.
Seville
The traditional Christmas lighting will be on November 30 with a “great event” on Avenida de la Constitución in which there will be carols and entertainment. This year the lighting is brought forward compared to the previous year, when it was on December 2. As explained by the mayor, assembly began last October and the lighting will reach a total of 294 streets.
Santillana del Mar
The Santillana del Mar City Council has decided to increase its commitment to Christmas and this year it will illuminate the towns of the municipality with nearly 500,000 light bulbs in total. The lighting will be on Friday, November 29 at 7:00 p.m. This year the decoration “will not have much to do with previous editions”, according to the City Council, since new elements will be incorporated such as the ‘Christmas City’, which will be installed in the Revolgo Park and which, according to the City Council , will feature bears, reindeer, a lake and even artificial snow.
Vigo
On Saturday the 16th, the Vigo City Council turned on its Christmas lights, which this year illuminate 420 streets throughout the city with 11.5 million LEDs, with some 1,300 arches and 2,500 illuminated trees. This year the lights turn on from 6:00 p.m. to midnight. However, on weekends they will remain on until 2:00 in the morning.
Torrejón de Ardoz
The Magic Christmas Park, a space of more than 100,000 square meters in Torrejón de Ardoz, was also inaugurated last week. This season features new features such as a ‘videomapping’ of the Magic Door and the music show El Secreto de la Navidad, and one of the tallest Ferris wheels in Spain, 42 meters high. Without forgetting the only ice rink on a lake, the largest life-size Nativity scene in Spain, the 3rd edition of the Ice Festival or the lantern festival.
Madrid
The Plaza de Colón will debut new Christmas lighting with the installation of a large luminous angel that the City Council has called the Angel of Madrid, made up of 36,400 points of light. This will be one of the novelties of the Christmas lighting, which will reach more than 230 locations in the 21 districts and will have almost 12 million LED bulbs. The large luminous Nativity scene that was in the Plaza de Colón will be moved this year to the confluence of Alcalá Street with Gran Vía. The lighting ceremony will be on the 28th at Puerta del Sol.
Genil Bridge
On Thursday, November 14, Puente Genil (Córdoba) became the first municipality in Spain to turn on the extraordinary Christmas lighting. Christmas in this town is illuminated by almost two million points of LED lights, including the light and sound show on Paseo del Romeral, and has 281 arches, 105 street lamps, eight grouped motifs, two facades, eight floor figures, four signs, 840 garlands, and eight projectors, along with 133 decorated natural trees.
Logrono
The act of lighting the Christmas lighting in Logroño will be brought forward this year to Friday, November 29 and will change its setting to the Market Square, where some of the unique elements that will be installed around the city will be concentrated and the co-cathedral will have lighting special.
Salamanca
Salamanca aspires to be one of the most attractive Christmas destinations in Spain with light shows, decorations and a Christmas market that will be launched from November 29, according to the mayor of the capital, Carlos Manuel García Carbayo.
Murcia
Murcia’s Christmas lighting will be turned on on Saturday the 23rd. In addition, for the first time, both the city center and the 59 districts and the 8 districts will be illuminated simultaneously.
Barcelona
Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia will repeat for the second year as the scene of the city’s Christmas lights lighting ceremony, with a show on Thursday, November 28. In addition, the Christmas proposal of the Port of Barcelona, called ‘Nadal al Port’, will incorporate in its sixth edition two new attractions to attract the younger public, and will expand its ecological ice rink from 400 to 550 square meters.
