The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with veterinarians from the Lorca City Council, has developed operation ‘Lupus’, an investigation initiated to pursue the illegal possession of protected species in captivity, which has culminated in the investigation of a resident of the municipality of Lorca, which had four specimens of Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) as pets in an enclosure next to your home.
Specialists from the Benemérita Nature Protection Service have investigated the resident of Lorca and have instructed him as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against flora and fauna, for the illicit possession of specimens of protected wildlife, whose possession in captivity is prohibited. .
The actions began at the end of last October, when the Seprona civil guards obtained a series of indications, thanks to citizen collaboration, about the possible possession of wolves on the plot of a resident of Lorca.
The first steps of the operation allowed us to obtain the location of the protected species. The civil guards verified on site that in a fence attached to the house there were four canids that looked like wolves, which were being fed meat.
The Seprona specialists then coordinated with the Veterinary Service of the Lorca City Council to determine that the canids found, due to their characteristics, were compatible with the Iberian wolf.
The operation has recently culminated with the identification and investigation of the inspected, who has been instructed as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against flora and fauna, for the illegal possession in captivity of wild specimens of protected fauna.
The Iberian wolf is a specimen that is protected and is included in the Annex to Royal Decree 139/2011, of February 4, for the development of the List of Wild Species under Special Protection Regime and the Spanish Catalog of Endangered Species.
