At least six tourists have died to date in Laos due to the consumption of alcohol adulterated with methanol. The Australian authorities confirmed this Friday the death of a 19-year-old girl who had been hospitalized for several days and who has become the sixth person to die from this poisoning.
This is Holly Bowles, the second Australian victim, who had traveled to the country with Bianca Jones, also deceased after drinking shots of homemade alcoholic beverages a week ago in the tourist destination of Vang Vieng.
His family has confirmed the death and has said they feel “destroyed” by the newsaccording to a statement collected by Australian media. “He has had his best experience traveling through Southeast Asia and meeting new friends,” his relatives and friends have highlighted.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has expressed her regret at the “tragic death” and has conveyed his condolences to his family and friends. Bowles and Jones had been transferred to a hospital in Laos on November 13 after becoming intoxicated from the consumption of adulterated alcohol.
They are joined by Simone White, a 28-year-old British woman; an American tourist and two Danish women, ages 19 and 20, who They died this week. All of these deaths are already being investigated by the Lao Police, although the testimonies collected to date suggest that the drinks contained methanol, which is toxic and can be fatal if ingested.
