The accusation by a Vox councilor to a Más Madrid councilor of foreign origin, which took place last Monday during a Madrid City Council commission, has continued in the form of racist and sexist comments on social networks. More Madrid has denounced this Friday the campaign of hate that its councilor Carolina Elías has been suffering since Ignacio Ansaldo reproached her for her Salvadoran origin and that she was collecting “from all Spaniards.”
In a letter sent by Rita Maestre to the mayor and other municipal government officials, the opposition spokesperson urges that this behavior have an appropriate institutional response “that demonstrates the commitment to the defense of equality, respect for diversity and dignity of all members of the Corporation.”
“What we have seen these days in response is a campaign of hate, racism and machismo orchestrated by the extreme right on social networks,” says Maestre after his party called for Ansaldo’s resignation for his xenophobic words. “I demand that the mayor speak out unequivocally in support of Carolina Elías. And putting a firewall to the disrespect of the extreme right,” he added.
Councilor Carolina Elías herself has shared some of the comments she has received on her X profile. “You are an orangutan”, “throw her into the sea” or “a talking monkey” are just some of the racist phrases that were dedicated to him before his video in which he denounced the words of his Vox counterpart.
“They are not going to scare me. I am Salvadoran, Spanish and a councilor of the Madrid City Council. Ideas for freer and fairer lives are worth it,” Elías herself warns in response to the insults received.
Más Madrid has presented a formal complaint about these events to the president of the commission in which Ansaldo participated, PP councilor Jaime Taboada. At the moment the Madrid City Council has not issued any reaction.
