The total cost of the catastrophes that occurred in Spain in 2023 was 4,450 million eurosaccording to the calculations of the Disaster Barometer presented today in Madrid at the IX Symposium of the Disaster Observatory of the Aon Spain Foundation. These data show an increase in 1.55 billionmore than 50%, compared to 2022, when a cost of 2.9 billion euros was reached.
On the other hand, the insured cost of the catastrophes meant a bill of 2,449 million eurosan increase of 63.7% compared to the previous year, with 1,492 million. The imputed cost of the actions of the first responders, that is, Civil Protection, the Military Emergency Unit (UME) and the Spanish Red Cross, assumed 124 million eurosreducing compared to the 2022 figure, 166 million.
Likewise, the impact on GDP amounted to 1,879 million euroscompared to 1,225 in 2022. The breakdown occurs as follows: 647 million correspond to the direct impact of the uninsured (420 in 2022), 827 million of indirect impact (542 in 2022) and 405 million of induced impact ( 263 in 2022).
DANA will shatter records
«All the data in this Barometer reflect a substantial increase in the cost of catastrophes compared to 2022 and, consequently, show lThe severity of disasters that occur in 2023«, declared Pedro Tomey, President of the Catastrophe Observatory of the Aon Spain Foundation. “Unfortunately, all these statistics will explode this year with the priceless tragedy in human lives and the incalculable material and psychological damage caused by DANA unleashed on the provinces of Valencia and Albacete,” he stated.
We still do not know the impact of DANA on Valencia, Andalusia and Castilla La Mancha this year, but according to Tomey’s statements it is foreseeable that the data on natural catastrophes increase even more and completely shatter the records set last year.
On the other hand, the year 2023, according to data from Aon Spainwas the worst to date in terms of aggregate figures for the cost of catastrophes in our country, as well as the worst in history for the Spanish countryside. The agricultural insurance recorded compensations worth 1,241 million of euros.
The most devastating disasters
In 2023, on the other hand, there were 37 deaths due to natural disasters, a figure much lower than the average number of deaths recorded for this reason since the beginning of the 21st century. High temperatures were the first cause of death, due to the shocking data recorded in 2023, recording 24 deceased. For their part, the floods caused 9 deaths, the winds caused 3 and the fires caused 1 death.
More than half of the insured costs in 2023, 1,241 million compared to a total of 2,449 million, were covered by Agroinsurancehighlighting the special vulnerability that the agricultural sector suffers in these tragedies. Drought and storms They were the atmospheric phenomena that most severely affected the countryside, especially cereal crops.
The most affected provinces
Taking into account the economic consequences for companies and families, the reduction in income derived from the direct and indirect impacts of accidents in 2023 exceeded 400 million euros. The impact on employment meant the loss of 38,600 jobs, compared to 25,000 in 2022.
Finally, to locate the magnitude of the damage by provinces, 58% of the cost paid for damages was located in three of them: Toledo (260 million), Madrid (164 million) and Zaragoza (167 million). In terms of cost per inhabitant, in Toledo it reached 370 euros, and in Zaragoza it exceeded 170. In 2022, the average per capita cost of the Spanish population was 6 euros per inhabitant. In 2023, there has been a dramatic increase, up to 22 euros per capita.
