People who have a protagonist profile (ENFJ), based on extroverted and charismatic personalities, have greater oral and written comprehension of another language.
This is reflected in a study carried out by the Preply platform, which has analyzed how the 16 MBTI personality types of Spaniards influence language learning.
The study was based on a survey of 1,000 Spanish English learners in September 2024 to determine how personality types can influence language learning.
The study analyzes how existing MTBI personalities influence language learning. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality assessment tool used in human resources departmentsin group dynamics and personal development, as well as in the educational field.
16 types of personalities
The indicator classifies people into 16 personality types based on four dichotomies: extroversion/introversion, sensation/intuition, thinking/feeling and judgment/perception.
Within the category of ‘diplomats’, which are profiles that combine the most intuitive (N) and sentimental (F) personalities, is the ‘protagonist’ profile (ENFJ), which occupies first place in the general learning ranking of languages.
It is an extroverted and charismatic profile, which allows you, as the study reflects, to have a better oral and written understanding of the language.
The students who have the easiest time learning languages are those who fit within the personalities ‘protagonist’ (ENFJ), ‘commander’ (ENTJ) – profiles endowed with natural confidence, extroverted and who enjoy having conversations- and ‘innovative’ (ENTP) – analytical, extroverted people with great interest in learning.
Those who present the most difficulties
On the other hand, those who show the most difficulties when learning a new language are those who are classified as ‘virtuous’ (ISTP), practical and very action-oriented people, who enjoy solving problems; ‘adventurous’ (ISFP), creative, sensitive and spontaneous people; and ‘entrepreneurs’ (ESTP), highly intelligent profiles who like competition.
The personality ‘logic’ (INTP) has the best reading comprehension when learning a new language, although it falls off the podium as far as the general average is concerned. The reasons behind this, explains Professor Alison Mackey, chair of the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown University, are that “the study of grammar and writing rules through books, applications or discussions with tutors allows the student to carry the rhythm of grammar focusing on details of the language.
According to gender and age
The study also analyzes the ease of learning languages based on gender and age. According to the data, men and women showed similar scores in most skills, with slight variations.
Men obtained an average of 5.03 points out of 7 in oral skills, compared to 4.96 obtained by the female gender. When it comes to reading skills, The numbers are also very even.with a 5.12 for women and a 5.01 for men.
Generationally, Generation Z and Millennials scored higher in communication skills compared to older generations. Generation Z averaged 5.11 in reading skills and 5.07 in listening skills, while Baby Boomers scored 4.99 and 4.75 in the same categories respectively.
