the movie ‘Gladiator 2‘is being, as expected, the main protagonist of the billboard in this final stretch of health. The long-awaited sequel to the movie Ridley Scott arrives almost 25 years after the first installment, starring Russell Crowebroke records. In its first days in Spanish cinema, the premiere has already become one of the best of the year.
The film is also on everyone’s lips and is one of the topics of debate of the week, in social gatherings but also on social networks. Even the well-known Pedro Ruiz or Arturo Pérez-Reverte, regular protagonists of viral moments due to their comments on their X accounts, have not been able to avoid giving their respective opinions on the matter after having enjoyed the epic film.
The film is giving much more and reactions from not so popular characters and accounts are also going viral. One of them is ‘Ancient Rome up to date‘, a dissemination account of Roman culture led by the archaeologist Néstor F. Marquéswho has been waiting for the movie for a long time. Thus, months ago he already warned that the trailer had an error and now, after having seen it twice, he wanted to break his silence to talk about the “historical errors” of the fiction film.
«History repeats itself»
Marqués remembers, first of all, that with Gladiator, Scott managed to “tell a shocking, visually attractive story with zero historical rigor” with which he “managed to revive the world’s passion for ancient Rome.” However, the expert considers that «history repeats itself plot by plot” and to keep in mind that “it is neither a sequel nor a remake, but a mixture of the two: a RECUELA.”
In any case, the ‘influencer’ is clear that the film is “visually very spectacular”, entertaining and ideal to enjoy if you are a Roman fan, although he recommends “disabling everything you know about ancient Rome to avoid unnecessary suffering (in this and any other film, series or novel). «It is not a cult film, it is not a profound film, it is not a historically rigorous film. “It’s peplum cinema in the style of the 21st century,” he warns before reeling off “the historical juice.”
The time has come to break my silence.
Now that Gladiator II has been released, here is the opinion thread about the film with comments (the first part without spoilers) and reflections.

Thus, first of all, Marquis regrets that the film focuses on Rome at the beginning of the 3rd century and has as protagonists the emperors Caracalla and Geta when in the year in which it is dated, 200, the reigning emperor was his father, Septimius Severe. They began to govern in 2011. «This is one of those ‘mistakes’ that is difficult for me to understand. Did it cost more money to say that the year was 211? No historical advice is needed to confirm that information. Wikipedia gives it to you. Why fail for free?», he asks.
Among his many notes, the archaeologist also details that Lucius, one of the protagonists, is nicknamed Janus, when according to the undubbed version it would have to be ‘Hanon’, a Punic name. Marqués also hallucinates with the animals that appear in the film, from sharks in the Colosseum to a gladiator riding a rhinoceros.
Furthermore, regarding the decoration and general images of Rome, the archaeologist detects “very strange obelisks” and greenish busts that he does not understand why they are not in gold. Nor does he understand that the Colosseum is on top of a hill and that “beyond the gate of Rome everything is third world». Marqués gives many more details that bother him about the film, something that is giving a lot of value to his X thread, which already has more than 1.6 million views.
