The Spanish technology manufacturer SPC has presented an application compatible with non-smart phones that aims to make life easier for millions of older people, thanks to a tool specially designed for the needs of families caring for the elderly. With a 40% business share in the simple mobile segment, SPC proposes a twist to its range of devices for an audience that demands equipment that is especially easy to use and unrelated to the features of conventional smartphones.
SPC sources explain that the first step to access the advantages of this type of services consists of activating registration in the ‘SPC Care’ application by the caregiver. Next, the creation of the profile of the senior person is required, with the corresponding name, date of birth, mobile number and other valuable information. Next, it is proposed to carry out a simple linking of the SPC mobile to any other smartphone. In this way, the caregiver or family member will receive information about the charge level of the elderly person’s mobile phone, as well as the location of the elderly person – either by GPS or by triangulation of cellular networks – in addition to ringing the device remotely. or receive notices and notifications.
Likewise, the service allows remote configuration of the SPC Care application on the elderly person’s mobile phone for functions such as, for example, regulating the font size of messages, adjusting the brightness of the screen or the sound of the doorbell or the emergency button (with up to 15 calls to trusted contacts and five attendance numbers). At the same time, the application reinforces the protection of the device to avoid spam, contacts with strangers or the creation of ‘black lists’ to avoid receiving calls or messages.
The tool offers activity and security alerts, with notifications of low battery, prolonged inactivity, missed calls or received messages with the aim of ensuring the safety of the family member. Along with all of the above, the application allows you to record medical appointments, medication reminders and other data such as the number of daily steps taken. The management of the elderly person’s mobile phone is not limited only to one person, but also allows the collaboration of assistants, with administrator, collaborator or guest profiles. ““We want the app to offer solutions to all family problems and to empower the elderly.”according to company sources. The only mobile phone that currently supports ‘SPC Care’ is ‘SPC Polaris’, with GPS, hands-free, 4G connection, remote settings, pedometer functions, reminders, easy charging, emergency button and anti-SPAM filter, with a price 99.90 euros, with a special discount of 20% if the purchase is made through the manufacturer’s website.
In the case of the Polaris model, whose main screen is 2.8 inches, incorporates a 1400 mAh battery and charges via USB-C or charging base, guaranteeing prolonged use during the day and always maintaining user connectivity. It also has a 2 Mpx camera with flash, a calendar with a capacity of 2,000 contacts and internal storage of 48 MB + 128 MB, expandable up to 32 GB with microSD. Additionally, it includes functions of special interest to older people such as FM radio, flashlight, alarm and calendar.
Use of technology among the elderly
On the other hand, the same sources have revealed the main data from the “Study on the use of technology among our elderly”, prepared by SPC among people over 70 years of age in their care, which reveals that more than 90% of older people in our country have access to some type of technological device. “Among the gadgets that the elderly in our country own, smartphones (49%) and mobile phones without internet access (45%) are two of the most widespread. However, this significant technological adoption does not guarantee that they know how to use it correctly. autonomous”. Given this reality, SPC 2 research reveals that nine out of ten seniors (88%) require assistance to perform basic tasks on their mobile phone, either occasionally (29%), frequently (44%) or every time. who try to use their cell phone (15%); affecting the autonomy and well-being of this group and evidencing the reality of the digital divide in our country”.
