The Galician Government has analyzed in its weekly meeting and with the background of the effects of DANA in Valenciaa report that studies the actions in which it works to prevent flooding and that range from regulatory steps, such as authorizing the cleaning and adaptation of river spaces with a simple responsible declaration, to projects such as creating controlled flooding areas in urban areas.
In his appearance after the weekly meeting of the Executive, which took place this Monday in the Autonomous Chamber, both the president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, and the Minister of the Environment, Ángeles Vázquez, announced that they plan to mobilize next year more than 35 million in the planning of actions against flood risks in the area of the Galicia Costa hydrographic basin.
The package of actions includes steps aimed at avoiding or minimizing overflows – legislatively favoring clean-ups, toughening penalties or reducing the reports and procedures necessary to carry out necessary works – and the creation of controlled flood areas in urban areas to retain large quantities of water in cases of intense rain and with capacity to integrate into future green corridors.
Vázquez stressed that in 2024, river cleaning was carried out in an area of about 500 kilometers, considered the highest priority, but he stressed the need to continue working in the field of prevention and planning. And in fact, he has argued that the Flood Risk Management Plan being worked on for the 2028-203 horizon will raise 172 risk areas and will go from 548 kilometers to 566.
