The Government of Cantabria, through the Ministry of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality, will launch a campaign, from this Monday the 18th to next day the 25thto make the victims visible and mobilize society to denounce and take action against gender violence and, in this way, achieve a collective response to this problem that “it continues to be a social scourge that does not cease.”
As reported by the Executive in a press release, this campaign is framed in the events of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women which is celebrated on November 25, and its axis focuses on name each of the victims to make visible that behind each figure hides a “truncated, irreplaceable and irrecoverable” life story.
COMPLAINTS
For this reason, the center of the campaign is the number 58, which represents the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners in Spain in 2023underlining the human tragedy that is hidden behind the cold statistical figures. By including the names of the 58 victims in the commemorative video, we also want to provide the campaign with an emotional component that serves as a tribute and homage to the victims and their families, in addition to promoting social reflection on a first-rate drama that Since 2003 it has claimed the lives of 1,284 women in Spain.
73.2% of the women murdered in 2023 had not previously reported their attacker
Through this campaign, we also seek to raise awareness in society about the importance of reporting as an essential first step to save lives and as a key tool in the eradication of violence against women. For this reason, it is highlighted that 73.2% of the women murdered in 2023 had not previously reported their attacker, which reflects the need to create environments in which victims feel supported and protected, both by institutions and by society as a whole.
“Promote a culture of respect, equality and absolute rejection of any form of violence against women constitutes a priority for the Government of Cantabria”, the Executive has highlighted that alerting society about the need to report and encourages each person to be an active part in the eradication of gender violence.
