The future president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Saturday the nomination of oilman and Republican mega-donor Chris Wright to be Secretary of Energy.
In a statement, the Republican indicated that with the election of Wright, head of the oil service group Liberty Energy – based in Denver (Colorado), he seeks to improve private sector investments and the “energy dominance” of the United States to ” reduce inflation, win the Artificial Intelligence arms race with China and expand the country’s diplomatic power.
Wright, who has doubted the existence of the climate crisis, will also be part of a new “National Energy Council,” Trump said, made up of all government agencies involved in “production, generation, distribution, regulation, transportation and energy permits.
To be confirmed in the position, the oilman must nevertheless obtain a simple majority of the votes of the Senate, where the Republican Party controls 53 of the 100 seats.
Wrigt has defended fossil fuels in an interview with American media, indicating that they are “necessary” for society and criticizing the transition to clean energy.
Since his victory was confirmed in the last November 5 elections, Trump has been shaping his vision for the country with controversial choices in his cabinet, appointing around twenty people who share a common profile: absolute loyalty to his vision, a good presence on television and firm support for his measures such as mass deportations.
