The Commons have distanced themselves in their National Assembly of the agreement between PSOE and Sumar in the Congress of Deputies to eliminate the tax on energy companies, and “demand” in a resolution, not only its maintenance, but also that the current tax rates be doubled to make it permanent.
Last Monday the PSOE and Sumar reached an agreement on a dozen tax changes for 2025 that leave out the tax on energy companies, so it will decline on December 31, 2024, although they are committed to extending the banking tax and a special tax on luxury goods.
Although Sumar was initially in favor of maintaining the tax on energy companies, this formation confirmed that it had accepted an agreement with the PSOE which means that this tax will decline on December 31 and that in 2025 companies will no longer have to pay it again, as they have paid it in 2023 and 2024.
The Comuns wanted to distance themselves this Saturday from the decision of PSOE and Sumar to eliminate the tax on energy companies and, in their National Assembly that they are holding this weekend in Barcelona, they have approved a resolution that goes in the opposite direction.
In this resolution, which is titled “Against neoliberal culture, progressive taxes for social justice”, the Comuns “demand the maintenance and increase of temporary taxes on banking and energy, doubling current tax rates and converting both taxes into permanent taxes.
The text of the resolution also denounces “the opposition to this measure by right-wing political forces due to their subjugation to the interests of large corporationsas well as the timidity of the PSOE to act more forcefully in the defense of public resources against the ethical grievance that represent the enormous benefits of these companies”.
Regarding the temporary tax on large fortunes, the Comuns advocate “tripling the current tax rates and converting it into a permanent tax through its conversion into new rates of the state wealth tax regulations“. The proposed resolution has been approved unanimously among the militants registered in the IV National Assembly of Commons.
