The price of companies in the pharmaceutical sector has plummeted following Donald Trump’s nomination as the next secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his anti-vaccine positions.
After the nomination was confirmed this Friday, the price of the laboratories of the Old Continent has registered sharp falls since the first moments of negotiation. The most intense drops have been those corresponding to vaccine manufacturers such as Bavarian Nordic (-17.38%); BioNTech (-8.76%); GSK (-5.13%); Sanofi (-3.85%) and AstraZeneca (-3.05%).
In addition, other European companies in the pharmaceutical sector were also trading with substantial declines such as Novo Nordisk, with a decline of more than 3%, while the Swiss Roche and Novartis fell 2.37% and 0.63%, respectively, with just over an hour to go until the close of the session.
For their part, the large American pharmaceutical companies were also trading with sharp declines, corresponding to thes biggest falls to vaccine manufacturers Moderna (-5.15%) and Pfizer (-5.34%). The biopharmaceutical company Amgen lost more than 4% and Novavax lost 2.55%, while Eli Lilly fell 2.28%.
In statements to Financial TimesHenrik Juuel, financial director of Bavarian Nordic, one of the vaccine manufacturers most punished this Friday, attributed the collapse of the company’s shares to an “overreaction” to Kennedy’s nomination.
Donald Trump, the next occupant of the White House, lamented when announcing the nomination of Robert Kennedy Jr. that “for too long Americans have been crushed by pharmaceutical companies and the food industrial complex”, which he accused of participating in “deception, misinformation and misinformation” of society.
Thus, Trump has asserted that, with Kennedy Jr. at the helm, the HHS will serve to “help ensure that everyone is protected from chemicalsharmful, contaminants, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and food additives that have contributed to America’s overwhelming health crisis.
For his part, the future US Secretary of Health promised to be an “honest public servant” if he is confirmed as head of the HHS: “Together we will end corruptionwith the revolving door between industry and Government, and we will return to our health agencies their rich tradition of evidence-based and reference science.
Kennedy has expressed his opposition to the US government’s vaccine policy, questioning the number of injections administered in childhood and raising doubts about anti-virus vaccines Covid-19. Despite these claims, he has not openly called for a ban on any and, he said in an interview last week, has no plans to “eliminate vaccines.”
