Specifically, the Zaragoza City Council will contribute 75,000 euros from the Development Cooperation item for two humanitarian emergency projects, presented by the Sahrawi delegation of Aragon and by the NGO Dono Manga in Chad.
The first of them focuses on repairing the damage to houses and facilities that caused heavy rains and floods last September in the Sahrawi fields of Dakhla, which affected nearly 350 families.
The second project that the City Council will finance is the one presented by the NGO Dono Manga to alleviate the situation also caused by floods in Chad, with lost crops, destroyed houses and saturated refuge areas.
For its part, the Government of Aragon is going to finance with 100,000 euros the project that UNICEF is developing in Lebanon to meet the needs of 3,000 children with basic supplies and food (milk, bottled water, hygiene kits, items for women and girls and other support resources).
In addition, another 41,000 euros will be used to strengthen public health in Dakhla (Western Sahara) with the rehabilitation of the pharmacy. The Huesca City Council will contribute 4,000 euros to this same project.
The Zaragoza Provincial Council will contribute 150,000 euros, which will be used to finance three projects. The first of them, managed by ARAPAZ, will be fully funded with 102,000 euros and will focus on an intervention of emergency for people displaced by the war in Lebanon to provide food, water and medicine.
The second project, developed by CERAI, will provide 33,000 euros to support the reconstruction of homes of the families affected by the floods in Algeria with the construction of houses and haimas. The other 15,000 euros will be allocated to a project carried out by UNDRAIGA, ALOUDA and LESTIFTA, in the Sahrawi camps in Algeria to distribute batches of food and basic necessities.
What is the Autonomous Emergency Committee
The Autonomous Committee for Humanitarian Emergencies of Aragon is a working group of a stable nature between the Aragonese administrations and NGOs to coordinate the Aragonese response to emergencies and raise awareness in Aragonese society.
It was established on October 18 to evaluate a new shipment of aid with the aim of addressing the urgent needs of the population. From that moment on, the deadline was opened for NGOs to present humanitarian aid projects through an online form. At the meeting, the proposals among the participating entities were evaluated.
The Zaragoza City Council, Government of Aragon, Zaragoza Provincial Council, Huesca City Council and the Aragonese Solidarity Federation (FAS) participated in today’s meeting. All these entities are members of this body.
