The number of foreign workers in Spain remains at historic highs. This was announced by Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations on Friday. In October there were 2,894,162 foreign affiliates, having previously discounted seasonality and the calendar effect. During the month the total was 29,706 employed people from other countries.
The 2019 figures, prior to the impact of the pandemic, show an increase of 731,763 foreign workers, that is, almost 34% more. In relation to general affiliation, foreign workers represent 13.6% of the total employed. He Ministry has reported that, in the last five years, the percentage of foreign affiliates has increased more than two points.
Compared to the last year, the increase in members from other countries has been 210,692. This figure is the highest in this month’s series. Regarding the regional breakdown, 31.6% are workers from European Union countries. The countries that stand out the most are Romania, Morocco, Colombia, Italy, Venezuela and China.
If we look at the distinction by gender, of the total number of foreigners, 1.6 million are men, while the number of women is close to 1.3 million, having grown by 34.6% since before the pandemic. They represent 44% of the total foreign workers.
In relation to the current turbulent geopolitical context, one fact stands out above the rest. 72,374 social security affiliates come from Ukraine. Since January 2022, the number has grown by 25,115 members. Therefore, since the beginning of the war the number of Ukrainian members has grown by 53.1%. As for the details, the vast majority of Ukrainian affiliates are salaried, about 83.5%, while 16.4% are self-employed.
Speaking of regimes, it is necessary to break down the figure between employees and self-employed workers. 83.8% of foreign affiliates joined the General Regime, with a figure of 2,425,138 workers. In this sense, the proportion is very similar to that of all workers. 84% are included in this regime.
In relation to the Self-Employed Regime, the figures are 463,767 foreign contributors, a figure that represents 13.7% of the total number of self-employed workers. In the last year alone, foreign members of the autonomous regime have increased by 7.8%.
In relation to the rising sectors in the last twelve months, there are six that grew above ten percent: Administrative Activities and Auxiliary Services (11.8%), Transportation and Storage (11.2%), Artistic Activities, Recreational and Entertainment (10.8%), Financial Activities (10.5%), Hospitality (10.4%) and Health Activities and Central Services (10.38%).
Other sectors that grow more moderately are Commerce, Electrical Energy Supply, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning or Construction. This distribution by sectors, in the words of the Ministry, shows a diversification in the areas of employment with the highest employment of foreign workers.
