Argentina has been the only country in the world who voted this Friday against a resolution that condemned sexist violence in the digital environmentpresented at the UN General Assembly, which received the support of 170 countries, as well as 13 abstentions.
The text, presented in the third committee of the Assembly, was titled ‘Intensifying efforts to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in the digital environment’, and had been presented by France and Holland.
The resolution, which It is not advisory but mandatory (like all those of the UN), it urges states to take measures to prevent this type of digital violence against women and girls. Before its approval, the Assembly rejected ten amendments proposed by different countries that advocated for more inclusive language and less inclined towards “Western values.”
As justification for its rejection of the resolution, Argentine diplomacy has said that “the feminist agenda should not be confused with other objectives” and that “associating it with the practice of violence in developing countries does not conform to the evidence that shows multiple factors.” or causes of violence”.
In that same commission, Argentina has once again distinguished itself on the day in two other votes. On the one hand, it has been one of the only six countries that have voted against of another resolution, approved by an overwhelming majority – 170 countries in favor and nine abstentions –, in favor of the self-determination of the Palestinian people.
And later, it was one of the five countries to vote against another resolution titled ‘Report of the Human Rights Council’approved in its case by 111 votes in favor and 62 abstentions. In this last vote, Argentina’s “fellow voters” were Israel, Nicaragua, Russia and Belarus.
It has been following the arrival of Javier Milei to the Presidency of the country that Argentina has begun to deviate from some of the consensus most shared within the United Nations on issues such as the climate crisis, the 2030 Agenda, sexual and reproductive rights or conflicts in the Middle East.
