Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has filed a complaint against platform X (formerly Twitter) before the Paris courtsin which he accuses the social network of promoting misinformation and allowing identity theft. This complaint responds to what they consider a lack of control over the spread of false content in X, after having revealed a defamation operation against him. A problem that, according to RSF, has worsened since Elon Musk acquired the company.
The organization argues that the platform not only houses disinformation, but also allows fraudulent accounts to impersonate public figures or recognized mediawhich undermines the credibility of the information and ends up affecting freedom of expression.
“By refusing to remove content that it knows to be false, after having been duly informed by us, X becomes complicit in the misinformation that circulates on his platform. Today, it makes available to those who spread false information and seek to deceive and manipulate public opinion an arsenal of means and exceptional visibility, while guaranteeing total impunity for the authors. “It is time for him to be held accountable,” he said. Antoine Bernard, Director of Advocacy and Assistance of RSF.
“The objective of this procedure is to remind a social network as powerful as X and its managers that they can be criminally responsible,” he added. Emmanuel Daoud, RSF lawyer.
