Traditionally, this plant has been used for reinforce mental alertness and promote blood flow in general, and of the brain in particular. Thanks to its content of flavonoids and antioxidants, it has beneficial effects on cardiovascular health.

Beyond its preventive effect, and ‘brake’ on cognitive deterioration, stimulating neuronal growth, and memory, ginkgo is used for certain problems of the nervous system, although there is still not enough medical and scientific support.
Among those uses of the ginkgo biloba leaf are anxiety treatmentpremenstrual syndrome, sexual dysfunction, asthenia, hypertension and hemorrhoids, as well as arteriosclerosis.
Approved uses of ginkgo biloba, and contraindications
Thus, in Spain, ginkgo extract is marketed in the form of a medicine for the symptomatic treatment of alterations in cerebral microcirculation such as vertigo, dizziness and tinnitus. It is also useful for symptoms associated with circulatory failure in the extremities such as cramps.
The consumption of this plant should always be done under medical prescription and supervision, since excess doses could cause gastrointestinal discomfort, headache and some allergic skin reactions. Pregnant women and young children are contraindicated in taking it.
It is also important to take into account the interactions of this plant with some drugs such as aspirin or adiro, anticoagulants such as sintrom, ibuprofen and certain antidepressants. Therefore, the doctor should always have the last word.
