This is the second largest increase in the last 15 years, as it is still far from the 7.3% increase in salaries experienced in 2007, just before the financial crisis, and behind the 5.9% growth experienced in 2022.
The 5.3% increase in salaries last year is motivated, on the one hand, by the growth of the Spanish economy, with an increase in GDP of 2.7%, as well as by the increase in inflation, which closed 2023 with an average of 3.5%.
According to the Tax Agency report, the number of employees in 2023 was 20,098,799, while the total amount of salaries received amounted to 481.980 million euros.
Regarding the average salary in exclusively salary income, it reached 26,486, about 1,220 euros more compared to 2022, while the average annual remuneration exclusively for pensioners was 19,278 euros.
By autonomous communities (data for the Basque Country and Navarra are not included because they do not belong to the territory of the common tax regime), the highest average annual salary was recorded in the Community of Madrid, with 30,769 euros, followed by Catalonia, with 26,806 euros, Ceuta (24,812 euros) and Asturias (24,581 euros).
At the opposite extreme, Extremadura (18,344 euros), Andalusia (19,618 euros). Murcia (20,552 euros) and the Canary Islands (20,709 euros) presented the lowest figures.
The sector linked to financial entities and insurance companies, with 381,578 workers, recorded the highest average salary, with 48,300 euros, followed by Information and communications (631,594 employees), with 37,114 euros.
For its part, the salary in the industry, which employed 1.9 million employees, rose to 28,076 euros, while in the extractive, energy and water industries (226,764 employees) the figure rose to 33,276 euros.
In construction the average salary was 22,375 euros, while in commerce, repairs and transport it stood at 22,288 euros. In business services, at 21,614 euros, and in social services, at 29,320 euros.
Regarding agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing (employees), the average annual salary was 10,713 euros and in other personal and leisure services it stood at 13,589 euros.
