The elected president of the United States, donald trumpwill choose the Cuban-American senator from Florida for the important portfolio of Secretary of State Marco Rubioas reported this Monday by the newspaper The New York Times.
Citing sources close to Trump, the Times points out that this decision could still change, but the election of Rubio, 53, seems likely, especially after the former president considered naming the senator as his running mate, before finally opting for J.D. Vance.
The Miami Republican was elected to the Senate in 2010 and has maintained a position as hawk on foreign policyadopting hard lines on China and Iran in particular and expressing a position in favor of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Rubio, who speaks perfect Spanish, can also be of great support for the Trump Administration’s foreign policy for Latin America and its strategic objectives. Although some conservatives consider him hesitant on immigration, an issue that caused him political problems when he ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 against Trump and others.
During that campaign, Trump disparaged him as ‘Little Marco,’ and Rubio responded with scathing attacks. The senator’s name was already being considered to lead American diplomacy, given that he was on the list of possible vice presidents for a second term for the Republican.
Blond, of cuban originexerted a notable influence from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the policy towards Latin America during Trump’s first term, but some advisors to the future president believe that his ‘hawk’ profile contrasts with the isolationist ‘America First’ policy that Trump promotes.
Other candidates for MAGA
Trump has already chosen a part of what will be his Government team to undertake his MAGA (Make America Great Again) project: Tom Homan, new ‘border czar’, Elise Stefanikas the country’s ambassador to the UN and Stephen Miller as deputy director of White House policy.
Homan, 62, former director of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and “faithful defender of border control, will thus join the Trump Administration to take charge of our nation’s borders,” the president-elect himself said this Monday in a message on his Truth social network.
Elise Stefanik, for her part, is considered a defender of the Israeli cause. At 40 years old, he will lead the international organization with one of the slogans that have presided over the Republican’s campaign: ‘America first’ and the messages in favor of Israel, according to the newspaper The New York Post.
As for Miller, 39, he is the ideologue of Trump’s immigration strategy, as confirmed by vice president-elect, JD Vance. Miller served as Trump’s advisor during his first term in the White House, being the architect of his controversies immigration and border policies.
In addition, Trump offered this Monday to the Republican congressman Mike Waltz the position of national security advisor, a key decision-making position to navigate geopolitical conflicts such as the war between Russia and Ukraine and Hamas and Israel.
Finally, he has proposed to the former congressman Lee Zeldin for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) portfolio and, last Thursday, named the shadow director of his campaign, Susie Wiles67, chief of staff in the White House for her second term, which will begin on January 20, 2025.
