A total of 47 undamaged educational centers located in the area affected by DANA on October 29, which devastated entire municipalities in the province of Valencia, have recovered activity today. A total of 22,000 students have been able to return to the classrooms, although 77,000 more children and adolescents are still unable to go to class because their schools have been destroyed by the water.
The rest of the educational centers will gradually open and, in the meantime, the Department of Education has already communicated the system for hosting students in other schools, as reported yesterday at the meeting of the Integrated Operational Coordination Center of the Valencian Community (Cecopi). On Friday afternoon, the educational administration issued a circular in which it transferred the relocation of students affected by DANA to other facilities, while expanding the shelter modality at the request of families and centers.
In this sense, the Ministry has been working on this relocation, which in some cases will be within the same municipality as the affected center and in other cases outside. In the latter cases, there will be School transportation in case it is necessary.
However, Education has responded to the requests of some centers and families who had requested extend the foster care modalityso its validity has been established until November 22. From that date on, if families wish to make a definitive change of educational center, they must request it from the Schooling Body from the corresponding town, reports Ep. The ‘welcoming’ teaching center will inform families of this and will facilitate the procedures, “as far as possible.”
The circular provides that the centers in the affected areas that did not suffer damage, or those that, although suffering damage, have already been favorably reviewed by the competent technical personnel, will resume teaching activity today. For their part, those in which there is some impairment that can be corrected in a period of less than or equal to 15 days will resume activity as adequate safety and hygiene is certified in those centers, following the instructions provided by Department.
DANA caused irreparable damage to around thirty schools in the Valencian Community and a total of 77,000 students are still unable to go to class.
